RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) _ The former head of North Carolina's largest teachers union wants the state Capitol in Raleigh to reflect the contributions of American Indians and Blacks.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Monday that Eddie Davis asked members of the state Historical Commission to add plaques recognizing historical contributions by racial and ethnic minorities at the Capitol.
The Capitol features statues, busts and plaques saluting the state's three signers of the Declaration of Independence, former governors, and women behind a 1774 tea party in Edenton. Only the Vietnam veterans memorial includes a Lumbee Indian and a black soldier among the three troops portrayed.
The state Historical Commission will study the suggestion.
