Shawn Anthony Mayes has died. He was born in Portland on Sept. 16, 1970.
He was the fourth child born to Louis James Mayes Jr., and Lucille Elizabeth Brown.
He was raised by Glenda Joyce Mayes.
Mayes attended Boise Elementary School and later attended Grant High School.
Growing up he worked with his father doing janitorial work. While a youth he worked at California Snackery, a neighborhood store. Mayes also worked at ABM Janitorial Service.
In 2005, he met and married Kristie Gates. Mayes entered the marriage with four wonderful children whom he loved and adored.
Mayes was well-known throughout the Northeast community and easily engaged in conversations with most people he met. His sense of humor brought laughter and smiles to many.
He will most definitely be remembered for his fun-loving and positive attitude.
One of Mayes' favorite youthful activities was playing basketball. He loved family functions, playing dominoes, barbecues and being with his family and friends.
Last year was a turning point in Mayes' life, when he started reading the Bible and praying. Most importantly, he asked for forgiveness for his sins and received salvation.
Preceding Mayes in death is his grandmother Gladys Holmes and grandfather James Charles Mayes; step grandmother, Viola Mayes; nephews Andre Mayes, Jamil Myrick and Adolphus B. Vance; nieces, Marla Bryant, Josephine Denson, Karina Mayes; and sister-in-law, Felicia Mayes.
Mayes is survived by his wife, Kristie Mayes; children, Javontae, Jordan, Tyrell and LaShay Mayes; father Louis James Mayes Jr.; "MaDear" Glenda Joyce Mayes; sisters Cheryl, Debra, Sharon, Patricia, Sandra, Sonia and Krystal Mayes; brothers; Steve and Louis James Mayes III; aunts, uncles, cousins, and 13 nieces, Sandrina Mayes, Shanice Mayes, Shaila Mayes, Kaila Mayes, Ebony Bryant, Shakaila Bryant, Chevelle Mayes, Jamila Myrick, Chanell Mayes, Sharlisa Fowler, Cherelle Brown, Mounia Mayes, and Mia Baggenstos; 10 nephews, Louis James Mayes IV, Deontrel Hill-Mayes, Joshua Ransom, Deondre Jones, William Parker Jr., Derrall Burns, Brandon Allen, Baron Mayes, Donald Johnson Jr., and Mario Mayes; and great-nephews, great nieces and friends.
Services were held Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Cox & Cox Funeral Chapel.
